Pop Music

Southern Californians have the odd luxury of being able to take for granted local blues musicians who can outplay most of those with major-label record deals. At the top of that list is guitarist Junior Watson, who has played with, among others, the Mighty Flyers, Canned Heat, James Harman and his own West Coast Playboys, along with many a duo gig with singer Lynwood Slim. Watson is that rarity who knows technique inside out, but who also is musician--and fan--enough to know that it’s the thought, not the number of notes, that really counts in soloing. Count on being continually surprised and amazed at the musical thoughts emanating from his fingers.

* Junior Watson, Abilene Rose, 10830 Warner Ave., Fountain Valley. 9 p.m. $8. (714) 963-1700.
