The “Big A” scoreboard and the “Little A” message board at Edison International Field will be turned off through the holidays, Anaheim Angels officials said Friday.

“We recognize our role as a community leader and feel it’s appropriate during the current energy crisis to take whatever measures possible to reduce the strain on available resources,” said Tim Mead, the Angels’ vice president of communications, in a written statement.

The Angels also will evaluate energy-saving options in the new year, he said.

The landmark “Big A” scoreboard is next to the Orange Freeway, and the “Little A” message board is on State College Boulevard.

Mead said the organization decided in a staff meeting Tuesday to turn the signs off.

The plug was pulled late Thursday.

A statewide energy crisis affecting most major electric utilities has raised the possibility of rolling “brownouts” and even blackouts.

Mead said he does not know whether the Angels have a so-called interruptible-service contract, under which companies agree to have their service interrupted on request in exchange for lower energy rates.
