* UC SANTA BARBARA (2-6) at UC RIVERSIDE (3-7), 7, KPRO (1570)--Despite their record, the Highlanders are making teams work for their victories. Against Big West Conference favorite Utah State, Riverside stayed close and led in the second half before losing by eight. Sophomore forward Mark Miller has led Riverside in scoring in all but three games. The Gauchos have started the season poorly the last three years, and any chance of a good beginning was wiped out when 6-foot-9 center Adama Ndiaye broke his finger before the season. He is still sidelined. Youth dominates the Gaucho roster, with sophomores Mark Hull and B.J. Ward starting at forward and guard respectively, while freshmen Branduinn Fullove, Casey Cook, Nick Jones and Jacoby Atako all get extensive playing time. Santa Barbara has won all six meetings, but the teams haven’t played since 1971.
