Texas Has Plenty of Incentive

Oregon is looking for its first 10-win season with a victory in Friday’s Culligan Holiday Bowl in San Diego, but Texas quarterback Chris Simms doesn’t believe that gives the Ducks any more incentive than the Longhorns.

“We haven’t had a 10-win season since 1982,” he said, “so that should count as never. There should be a rule where after 15 years it counts as never. In 1982 I was two.”

Simms is the son of former New York Giant quarterback Phil Simms, now an NFL color commentator for CBS.

The elder Simms attends Texas games whenever his schedule permits, but usually incognito.

“That’s the way it has always been,” Chris Simms said. “He used to come to games when I was a kid and watch from the car. But if I knew him, what he was really doing was listening to sports radio.”

Texas is playing in its 40th bowl game, breaking a tie for third with USC among major college football powers. Alabama leads with 50 bowl appearances, Tennessee is second with 41. Nebraska will tie USC for third (39) with an appearance at the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30.
