Harris Provides Spark to Ignite No. 6 Tennessee

Tony Harris scored 20 points and keyed two big runs as No. 6 Tennessee hung on to defeat No. 23 Iowa, 80-68, Friday in a semifinal of the Rainbow Classic at Honolulu.

The Volunteers (12-1) went on a 24-5 rally to close out the first half and take a 33-22 lead. Harris had four points and three assists during the spurt.

Harris then hit a pair of three-pointers during an 11-0 run to start the second half that gave Tennessee a 44-22 lead.

But the Hawkeyes (10-2) rallied behind four three-pointers by Brody Boyd and cut the lead to 58-53 on a basket by Jared Reiner.

Harris responded with a basket and Jon Higgins added a three-pointer to put the Volunteers back up by 10.

No. 2 Stanford 86, Fordham 60--Casey Jacobsen scored 19 points to lead the Cardinal past Fordham in the first round of the Cable Car Classic at Santa Clara.

Julius Barnes added 10 points and Jarron Collins had 11 rebounds as the Cardinal (10-0) played its first game since beating then-No. 1 Duke eight days ago. Stanford is off to the fifth-best start in school history.

No. 4 Wake Forest 90, Navy 58--Josh Howard had 17 points and Broderick Hicks added a season-high 12 as the Demon Deacons warmed up for their Atlantic Coast Conference showdown against No. 8 Virginia with a victory at Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Demon Deacons (11-0) won their 16th in a row to match the second-longest streak in school history. The victory also matched the program’s fourth-best start.

No. 9 Illinois 77, Illinois Chicago 64--Marcus Griffin scored 21 points as the Fighting Illini went inside to beat the Flames at Rosemont, Ill.

Coming off an eight-point loss at Texas, the Illini (10-3) dumped the ball into the 6-foot-9 Griffin and 6-11 Robert Archibald, who had 14 of his career-high 16 points in the second half and grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds.

No. 14 North Carolina 91, Massachusetts 60--Joseph Forte scored 16 points and five other players scored in double figures as the Tar Heels (8-2) rolled past the Minutemen (2-8) in the first round of the Hardee’s Tournament of Champions at Charlotte, N.C.

No. 17 Oklahoma 84, Oral Roberts 51--Nolan Johnson and Daryan Selvy each scored 14 points as the Sooners (10-1) used a balanced scoring attack to beat the Golden Eagles at the Touchstone Energy All-College Tournament in Oklahoma City.

No. 22 Notre Dame 97, Long Island 49--Troy Murphy had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Ryan Humphrey added 20 and 11 as the Fighting Irish (8-2) coasted to a win at South Bend, Ind.

OTHER GAMES

Pepperdine 81, Charlotte 70--Brandon Armstrong scored 41 points to lead the Waves to a victory over the 49ers in the first round of the four-team Arizona State Holiday Classic at Tempe, Ariz.

Armstrong was one of the few bright spots for the Waves (7-5), who shot 39% from the field. His 41 points was one short of the single-game record in the 34-year-old tournament.

Ohio 75, Arizona State 71--In the other Holiday Classic game, Anthony Jones scored a career-high 30 points and spurred a big second-half rally to lead the Bobcats (5-4) to a stunning victory over the host Sun Devils (7-3).

California 76, Yale 62--Sean Lampley had 19 points and Ryan Forehan-Kelly added 17 as the Golden Bears (7-3) overcame a halftime deficit to beat Yale in the Golden Bear Classic at Berkeley.

Temple 74, Pennsylvania 60--David Hawkins had a career-high 23 points at Philadelphia as the Owls (6-7) won their second in a row after a seven-game losing streak. The Quakers are 0-8.
