From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A Suburban and two tour buses packed with children ages 6 to 16 on a YMCA camping trip collided on Route 330 near the City Creek U.S. Forest Service fire station Saturday afternoon, sending at least 13 youngsters to area hospitals with minor injuries, San Bernardino County fire officials reported.

The victims were taken to five area hospitals by ambulance, fire officials said.

Firefighters said another crash had slowed traffic along the two-lane highway, which is the main route to area ski resorts and campgrounds, when one of the buses struck the car and the second bus failed to stop, said Running Springs fire Battalion Chief Tony Grabow. The highway was shut down for three hours after the 1:49 p.m. crash.

About 60 children who were not injured were taken to the U.S. Forest Service station until they could be picked up, fire officials said. County Fire Department counselors were sent to the scene to help the children.
