Major Renovation OKd for Golf Course

The Thousand Oaks City Council has unanimously approved a $10.2-million renovation of Los Robles Golf Course. The city will request construction bids in August.

About $6 million of the improvements will be paid for by revenues generated by the 37-year-old golf course. A city bond will cover the remainder.

“It’s a significant step forward on a very significant capital project,” Mayor Dennis Gillette said. “The golf course has served the community very well, but it is approaching 40 years of age and needs a lot of work and revitalization.”

The course’s 30-year-old irrigation and drainage systems and 17 of the 18 greens will be replaced, and 18 tee boxes will be expanded. About 120 parking spaces will be added, and one parking lot will be moved north of the driving range. A new pro shop and banquet center also will be built.

During renovation, expected to take nine months to a year, the golf course will keep nine holes open while the other nine are being rebuilt.

Since the city purchased the course in 1974, it has consistently made a profit, Hong said. So while the renovation costs are high, the city expects the course to earn back those dollars.

“It’s a very popular course and heavily used and, with the new facility, it will probably be even more so,” Hong said.
