The weather will probably determine if a half-mile stretch of Doheny State Beach--closed Monday night after a sewage spill--reopens this weekend, an Orange County Health Care Agency spokeswoman said. Agency officials expect to reopen the beach this afternoon if samples show that bacteria levels have fallen considerably for three consecutive days. But rain is expected today, so the beach could be closed again for the weekend. Doheny State Beach was closed Monday for the fourth time in a year when debris blocked a Moulton Niguel Water District line, causing an estimated 2,000 gallons of raw sewage to seep into nearby Oso Creek. The tainted water eventually flowed into San Juan Creek, which empties directly into the beach.
