Corea and Medal Will Fight for Title at Valencia Hyatt

Boxing debuts at the Hyatt Hotel in Valencia on Feb. 25 when Israel Corea of Oxnard faces Rodger Medal of Pasadena for the California featherweight championship.

The card is the first in a series organized by RW Promotions of Santa Clarita.

“We’ll be putting on five or six shows [at the Hyatt],” said Ron Williams, president of RW Promotions. “We’re still negotiating the contracts.”

Williams said part of the proceeds from the fights will benefit the Santa Clarita Boys and Girls Club.

“[The club is] expanding and we’re hoping to raise $10,000 for them,” he said.

Corea, who trains at La Colonia Boxing Club, holds the Fecar featherweight title and is 9-2 with one knockout.

Medal, from Nicaragua, is 11-2 with three knockouts.

The card features five other fights between young boxers, including a women’s bout between Kim Reed of Granada Hills and Lisa Valencia of Pomona.

Also on the card will be lightweights Rolando Reyes of Oxnard and Joe Shedarwich of Costa Mesa, each 2-0, and light-heavyweights Alex Virgen (2-2-1) of Santa Clarita and George Johnson (3-2) of Lancaster.

Welterweight LeAngelo Smith of Lancaster will debut and junior lightweight Marcos Arauz (0-1) of Lancaster will look for his first victory.

The first bout is at 7:15 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $75 for ringside, $50 reserved and $35 general.

The Hyatt Valencia is at 24500 Town Center Drive.

The weigh-in is at noon on Feb. 24 at Santa Clarita Lanes. Admission is free.
