A traffic study due out Friday gives Carbon Canyon Road the worst grade the city’s traffic engineer can give, and there’s little hope of the situation improving soon.

City statistics show that the road is a winding two-lane stretch of tight turns, few shoulders and sheer cliffs that is clogged with traffic.

City Engineer Phil Wray said the road, also known as California 142, logs 18,000 trips per day. Adding to the load will be the residents of 500 or so homes planned northeast of Olinda Village. Even with a conservative estimate of five trips per day for each new household, Carbon Canyon Road could see 23,000 vehicle trips per day.

“It’s running close to gridlock,” Wray said.
