Hines’ Return Is an Emotional Lift

Share

Rico Hines said he played at 65% Wednesday against USC, his first game back after essentially missing the previous five because of a sprained big toe, but no Bruin discounted the impact of the return of one of their emotional leaders.

“It’s not the same player yet, Rico-wise,” forward Jason Kapono said. “But it’s his fire, his spirit.”

Hines, a junior swingman and tri-captain, played 13 minutes in the victory at Pauley Pavilion, contributing a lift far beyond the two steals and one assist would indicate. His presence has always been worth more than his numbers.

“His leadership, his toughness, his defense, his spirit, his basketball IQ and savvy,” Coach Steve Lavin said.

Not to mention his aching feet.

Hines sprained the toe in the opening moments Jan. 22 against Arizona State, played only four minutes, then missed all of the next four games, spending much of that time with his right foot in a walking boot. He finally rejoined practice on Monday.
