Two Homers by Wertz Help Master’s Get Split

Mike Wertz hit two home runs in the first game and The Master’s College split a nonconference doubleheader with British Columbia on Friday at Master’s.

Wertz drove in seven runs and Josh Higgins struck out 10 in five innings to lead the Mustangs (8-3) to a 10-0 victory in the opener.

Three pitchers combined on a three-hitter and British Columbia won the second game, 7-1.

UC Santa Barbara 12, CS Northridge 4--Andy Campanella, from Crespi High, had four hits for the Gauchos (5-4) in a nonconference victory at Northridge.

Adrian Mendoza had two hits and drove in two runs for the Matadors (4-4).

Oxnard 6-8, San Diego 1-2--Robert Avila hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie in the second game and the Yellowjackets swept at Oxnard.

Avila hit his first home run of the season in the opener.

In the first game, Scott Robertson (3-0) had eight strikeouts and allowed one run in eight innings for Oxnard (7-2).

Ernie Borjas (3-0) pitched a six-hitter in the second game.

Canyons 5, Long Beach 4--Justin Wiley allowed two hits in 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Cougars in the Cy-Coast tournament at Long Beach (3-4).

Ryan McKnight and Tim Hutting each had two hits for Canyons (1-4).

Cal Lutheran 21, Caltech 0--Ryan Cooney had three hits, Paul Engel hit a grand slam and the Kingsmen (4-2) won a Southern California Intercollegiate Conference game at Caltech.

SOFTBALL

Biola 4-2, Cal Lutheran 0-4--Stephanie Cain had a two-run double in the first inning and the Regals earned their first victory of the season in the second game at Cal Lutheran.

Cain’s double broke a 1-1 tie and Cal Lutheran (1-5) avoided its worst start in history.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 82, Occidental 48--At Occidental, Christina Mosesso scored 17 points and the Regals (17-6, 10-1) clinched their third consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and fifth in six years.
