This Never Happened in the Good Old Days

Bill Plaschke took Ken Griffey Jr. to task [Feb. 11] for forcing the Seattle Mariners to trade him without getting adequate compensation. Maybe Ken was doing what he thought was best for Ken Griffey Jr.

There was a time when the owner of a baseball team could tell one of his players, “You’ll play for me for whatever I want to pay you or you won’t play for anyone.”

Now the owners have been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the world of free agency.

I find it hard to shed a tear for them.
