EASTERN SIERRA

The Lower Owens River flows have been raised slightly by the Department of Water and Power, but the river is still fishable and producing Alpers rainbows to about four pounds, and smaller browns. Sculpin-imitation streamers are best for fly fishermen, while the standard baits and spinners are working for the conventional crowd. The increased flows have boosted the fishing on the wild-trout section of the river, as the bigger browns have moved into the deeper pools, taking midge and caddis pattern flies. Pleasant Valley Reservoir is still producing too, although it’s a little higher up the road--and very cold.
