The Oxnard boys appeared to be peaking for the playoffs, but the Yellowjackets lost to visiting Downey Warren, 56-53, in a second-round Division I-AA game.

Oxnard (22-5), the Pacific View League champion and ranked No. 2 in the region by The Times, had a first-round bye after winning 11 consecutive games.

“I’m very disappointed,” Coach Henry Lobo said. “The kids are hurt. To not play our very best game was very disappointing.”

Lobo accused the Southern Section of showing little respect for the Pacific View League when the playoff pairings were announced, but he acknowledged the league’s 1-4 showing in the playoffs did little to improve its reputation.

“I talked about respect for the league,” he said. “But . . . all of us lost [our first game], except for Channel Islands.”
