DANA POINT
The City Council recently supported a plan that would keep the 949 area code in Dana Point for at least eight more years.
According to a staff report, the area code will be exhausted in the second quarter of 2002, when a new area code and possible overlays will go into effect throughout south Orange County. Overlays entail new prefixes without changing the area code, but require callers to dial 1-949 locally.
North American Number Plan Administration, which regulates area code distribution in the United States, Canada and a number of Caribbean countries, has asked some cities for input on how to tackle the impending area code crunch.
The council is supporting North American’s option that would keep the 949 area code in the city for the greatest amount of time.
