Woman Gets 6-Month Prison Term for False Tax Returns
A woman who underreported taxable income that went toward the purchase of two luxury homes was sentenced to six months in federal prison, authorities said Tuesday.
In addition, U. S. District Judge J. Spencer Letts ordered Monica Navarro, 42, to pay a $10,000 fine for filing false income tax returns for 1991 and 1992, U. S. Atty. Alejandro N. Mayorkas said in a statement.
Navarro pleaded guilty in October to failing to report $395,000 in income she received from a check-cashing business that she operated from a Van Nuys Boulevard law office of her ex-husband, personal injury attorney Roger Stout, the statement said.
Prosecutors said Navarro and Stout used the untaxed money to purchase luxury homes in Florida and California.
Stout, 57, of Westlake Village, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to defraud the Internal Revenue Service in connection with a $2-million tax-evasion scheme.
He will be sentenced March 20 by U. S. District Judge A. Howard Metz.
Neither Navarro nor Stout could be reached Tuesday for comment.
