“Learning, Exploring and Making a Difference” is a full day of learning experiences along and near the shores of San Pedro offered by the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s education staff and volunteers. From 9 a.m. to noon, visitors will learn about coastal sage scrub, native plants and animals, and the benefits of drought-tolerant landscapes. From noon to 3 p.m., participants will observe marine specimens, live invertebrates under microscopes, shark skin, birds and shells at the aquarium’s Discovery Sea Laboratory. There will also be opportunities to make a marine-related craft and to gather research information about many oceanic topics. A tide-pool walk to the nearby Point Fermin State Marine Life Refuge (which will be preceded by a slide show orientation) will follow at 3:30 p.m.

* “Learning, Exploring and Making a Difference,” Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, 3720 Stephen White Drive, San Pedro, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. All activities are free except the tide pool walk, which costs $1 per person. (310) 548-7562.

11 am: Art

A selection of 55 works by noted realist painter John Register will comprise a retrospective opening Saturday at the Weisman Museum of Art. A successful advertising executive, Register left the corporate world to focus on painting--he left an important business meeting to go to a dental appointment and never returned. Painting in a style similar to that of Edward Hopper, Register focuses on the lonely spaces inherent in urban and desert landscapes such as abandoned train stations, cafes, old hotel lobbies and vacant offices.
