Notre Dame scored its second victory over a Final Four participant from last season, upending No. 2 Connecticut, 75-70, Wednesday night in a Big East Conference opener at Hartford, Conn.

Troy Murphy had 33 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Fighting Irish, who snapped the Huskies’ 10-game win streak.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore matched his career high with 16 rebounds, 12 of which came on the defensive end, as the Irish (10-5) outrebounded the Huskies, 40-33.

Murphy’s versatility confounded the Huskies (10-2), who had difficulty against the Notre Dame’s zone defense.

“[Murphy’s] not just a low-post player,” Irish Coach Matt Doherty said. “If you put a smaller guy on him, he can post up. If you double him, we’ve got good shooters, so he can pass out of a double team. He’s very well conditioned.”

Murphy played all 40 minutes without a turnover.

Khalid El-Amin provided almost half of Connecticut’s offense with a career-high 34 points as the Huskies trailed nearly the entire game and shot only 35.7% from the field. The Irish shot 45%, including 50% from three-point range.

Notre Dame’s earlier victory over a Final Four participant was a 59-57 win at Ohio State to open the season.
