Muslims Mark End of Ramadan, Islam’s Holiest Month

Share

Thousands of Muslim men and women in traditional finery will gather today at places around Orange County to pray and share food and hugs for Eid-ul-Fitr, a joyous celebration marking the end of Ramadan.

Ramadan celebrates the revelation of the Koran, Islam’s holy book, to the prophet Muhammad. Islam’s holiest month requires the devout to fast from sunup to sundown, pray five times a day, study the Koran and contemplate good deeds for the future.

The gathering, which will be at the Orange County Fair and Exposition Center this year, has historically been the biggest celebration of its kind in Orange County. Last year at the Anaheim Convention Center, it drew about 9,000 people.

This year, the celebration will kick off at 8:30 a.m. at the fairgrounds, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. Islamic leaders changed the venue to accommodate the more than 10,000 expected to turn out.

Eid parties also will be held at the Islamic Center of Mission Viejo and the Sequoia Center of Buena Park.
