A pilot performing stunts at an air show in Upland died Saturday when his plane spun out of control and crashed on the grounds of a concrete plant, police reported. No one else was injured.

Lt. Ed Gray said Mark Steven Madden, 40, of La Mesa, was killed about 10:30 a.m. while doing a maneuver for the Pomona Valley Air Fair at Cable Airport. Madden’s plane spiraled down and burst into flames after it crashed.

Later Saturday, another pilot escaped serious injury after ejecting from an experimental aircraft that crashed into a dairy field near the Chino Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

An FAA spokesman said investigators did not know whether the second plane was part of the air show, held about eight miles north of the crash site.

The aircraft was described as a “build-your-own” plane. The pilot, who was not identified, was treated for minor injuries, authorities said.

The crashes are under investigation.
