Avalanche’s Modest Streak Comes to a Screeching Halt

Even with the roll the Colorado Avalanche has been on, they couldn’t come back on the Chicago Blackhawks.

Doug Gilmour had a goal and an assist Sunday night as the Chicago Blackhawks took an early lead and ended Colorado’s five-game unbeaten streak with a 5-3 victory.

Dean McAmmond, Eric Daze, Tony Amonte and Alex Zhamnov also scored for Chicago, which has consecutive home victories for the first time this season.

Steve Sullivan assisted on two goals for the Blackhawks, who have the league’s second-worst home record at 6-12-3.

By 3:49 of the second period, the Blackhawks had a 3-0 lead.

Colorado’s Peter Forsberg scored twice in the second period, cutting the Avalanche deficit to 3-2.

“We had our chances to tie it up,” Forsberg said. “[Jocelyn] Thibault made some big saves. But tonight we gave them way too much room at the start. We didn’t play a smart road game.”

Carolina 1, New York Rangers 0--Andrei Kovalenko scored a second-period goal at Raleigh, N.C., and Arturs Irbe recorded his 22nd shutout.

Irbe, pulled in the second period of Friday night’s 4-4 tie with the Mighty Ducks after giving up three goals, was sharp this time. He stopped 30 shots.
