In an effort to detect more cases of cervical cancer, free Pap smears will be given this month at health facilities throughout the county.
In Los Angeles County, cervical cancer among Latino, African American and Korean women is significantly higher than the national average of 7.4 per 100,000 women, according to the Office of Women’s Health in the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Among Latinas alone, the countywide rate is 19.5 per 100,000 women.
Locally, free Pap smears will be available through Jan. 31 at the Mid Valley Comprehensive Health Center in Van Nuys, the San Fernando Health Center in San Fernando and the High Desert Hospital in Lancaster. The simple procedure will be performed today, Jan. 21 and Jan. 28 at 29 Department of Health Services facilities. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling (800) 793-8090.
