Two workers were critically injured after an explosion triggered a fire at a Santa Ana car repair shop shortly after noon Wednesday, authorities said.

Employees Jose Alvarez, 34, and Clemente Rodriguez, 30, were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where they were treated for first- and second-degree burns to their faces and arms. They were reported to be stable, hospital spokeswoman Kim Murphy said.

The two men were working in the repair shop in the 2800 block of South Halladay Street when the accident happened, said Santa Ana Fire Capt. Randy Black.

The blast sparked a fire that took 28 firefighters more than a half-hour to extinguish, Black said.
