MTA May Fund Valley Bus Study

Share

A subcommittee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority recommended Thursday that the agency pick up the $140,000 tab for a study to determine the financial feasibility of creating a separate bus system for the San Fernando Valley.

Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan proposed that the MTA pay for the study, saying the agency represents all of the Valley cities that would participate in a new Valley Transit Zone.

“I’m in favor of having independent transit zones. I think they are more effective,” Riordan said.

MTA officials have proposed to pay the new Valley Transit Zone much less than what Valley leaders say it will cost to take over the service. The study will help determine whether the MTA’s offer is fair and accurately based on the costs of service.

“This study is a positive way of getting people’s minds to meet,” Riordan said.
