Coyotes Beat Sharks, Stay in First

Jyrki Lumme flipped the winning goal into the net with 44 seconds left in overtime to give the Phoenix Coyotes a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks at Phoenix on Sunday night.

The victory kept Phoenix in first place in the Pacific Division with its division-leading 26th victory. The Coyotes are 10-4 in their division and 20-9-2 against the Western Conference, the best marks in the conference.

Keith Tkachuk assisted on the winner, passing to Lumme about 15 feet out in the slot while being knocked to the ice. San Jose goalie Steve Shields was at the side of the crease and could only flail at the puck as it flew past.

Pittsburgh 4, Philadelphia 4--John LeClair scored with a minute to play and the Flyers tied the Penguins despite squandering a third-period lead at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins, playing their third consecutive game without the injured Jaromir Jagr, remained winless in overtime at 0-5-4.

Dallas 3, Chicago 2--Rookie Roman Lyashenko scored goals 10 seconds apart in the third period, lifting the Stars to a comeback win over the Blackhawks at Chicago.

Nashville 2, Vancouver 1--Vitali Yachmenev scored his third goal in three games to break a tie 1:37 into the third period as the Predators defeated the Canucks at Vancouver, Canada.

The Carolina Hurricanes ended a five-month contract dispute with former captain and all-star Keith Primeau by trading him to the Philadelphia Flyers for Rod Brind’Amour. Primeau, who had 30 goals last season, said he signed a five-year, $22.75 million contract with the Flyers and should be in uniform Thursday night. . . . New York Ranger and former King forward Kevin Stevens was jailed early Sunday on a drug charge and later put in a league substance-abuse program. Stevens, 34, was arrested at a Collinsville, Ill., motel on misdemeanor charges of soliciting prostitution and possessing drug paraphernalia.
