There’s Just No Avoiding Super Bowl, Related Shows

There is no escaping the Super Bowl this weekend. In addition to the big game on Sunday there are plenty of documentaries, specials and marathons connected to the NFL championship game.

ABC looks at the “Road to the Super Bowl,” Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Cartoon Network’s Super Bowl spoof, “Road Runner vs. Coyote,” Saturday at 6 p.m., examines the rivalry between the two Looney Tune characters. Pat Summerall and John Madden supply the play-by-play and commentary.

ABC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” Saturday at 8 p.m., features a pro football edition.

“Super Bowl Highlights,” Saturday at 11:30 p.m. on ESPN2, features a marathon of the past NFL championships.

TBS counters the Super Bowl with “24 Hours of Matlock,” beginning Sunday at 3 a.m. Andy Griffith stars as the wily lawyer in a 24-episode collection of the series’ best cases.

John Madden makes his picks for football’s top players on Fox’s “All-Madden Team,” Sunday at 10 a.m.

ABC presents the 34th annual Super Bowl from Atlanta, Sunday at 3 p.m. Al Michaels, Boomer Esiason and Lesley Visser will report on the highly hyped game. Phil Collins is scheduled to lead the glitzy halftime show titled “Tapestry of Nations.” The action begins on ABC with a four-hour pre-game show starting at 11 a.m. Steve Young is the analyst.

Specials

President Clinton delivers his final “State of the Union” address to Congress, tonight at 6 on CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, KCET, KVCR, CNN and C-SPAN.

Fox’s “The Road to Fame,” tonight at 8, looks at the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Calista Flockhart and Tiger Woods before they were stars.

Alex Cox pays tribute to “Akira Kurosawa: The Last Emperor,” Saturday at 5 and 8:45 p.m. on IFC.

Sports

Tara Lipinski and Brian Boitano are among seven Olympic figure skating champions competing in the “World Professional Championship,” Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m. on NBC.

Mike Tyson battles British champion Julius Francis in a bout from Manchester, England, Saturday at 10 p.m. on Showtime.

Movies

Paige Turco and Jason Beghe play two scientists dealing with a deadly flu bug in ABC’s thriller “Runaway Virus,” Saturday at 9 p.m.

Series

“Egg the Art Show,” Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on KCET-TV, is a 12-part series that profiles contemporary working artists and features exhibitions at art institutions around the country.

E!’s “Celebrity Profile” focuses on the life and career of Bob Hope, who will celebrate his 97th birthday in May, Sunday at 7 p.m.
