Doctors to Provide Free Medical Exams

Share

A group of doctors from Tzu Chi, the Buddhist charity corps of 25,000 volunteers, will provide free medical exams to the indigent residents of Blythe Street on Sunday.

The group will bring its mobile medical equipment to the nonprofit social-services agency Casa Esperanza, or House of Hope, and 10 physicians and dentists will provide the care.

“The majority of these families have no insurance, they’re medically indigent,” said Maritza Artan, director of Casa Esperanza. “Some of them have never even been to a doctor.”

Artan said members of Tzu Chi contacted her after hearing about a toy and food drive Casa Esperanza was conducting during the holidays. A Tzu Chi volunteer said the group could donate toys, but instead preferred to do something that could help the area’s needy Latino residents long term.

“For us it’s such a blessing,” Artan said. “We really need this.”

The free clinic will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Casa Esperanza, 14612 Blythe St. For more information, call (818) 786-1076.
