Santa Clara 70, Loyola Marymount 55--The season-long slide continued for Loyola Marymount, as the Lions again failed to show up offensively.

Despite holding Santa Clara to 35% shooting, the Lions shot only 33% and were nearly nonexistent inside as the Broncos won an ugly one before 693 at Gersten Pavilion.

Making only five of its 18 three-point shots, Santa Clara did much of its scoring after second-chance rebounds. The Broncos had 25 offensive rebounds against the Lions, who fell to 2-16 overall, 0-5 in the West Coast Conference.

Loyola Marymount also committed 18 turnovers while making only 17 of 51 shots.

Forward Elton Mashack, a Bishop Amat High product, did display the offense that made him an honorable mention all-conference selection last season. Mashack scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed six rebounds in the losing effort.

“We need a couple of others guys to come alive too,” Lion Coach Charles Bradley said. “It’d be good if [center] Pablo Machado and [forward] J.J. Sola come alive, as well.”

Sola and Machado combined for only eight points on three-for-nine shooting for the Lions, who have yet to defeat a Division I opponent.

Friday’s game wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The Broncos (12-8, 3-2) never trailed in leading by 11 at halftime and by as many as 28 with less than six minutes left before taking out their starters.
