Figueroa Makes Loara Pay the Penalty in Kennedy’s 3-2 Victory

Diego Figueroa drew a foul in the penalty area, then scored the winning goal on a penalty kick with two minutes remaining to help Kennedy defeat Loara, 3-2, in an Empire League boys’ soccer game Friday at Loara High.

Figueroa had two goals and an assist for Kennedy (10-9, 3-3 in league), which trailed at halftime, 2-1. Alvin Alvarez scored the tying goal five minutes into the second half off an assist from Figueroa.

Luis Damian scored two first-half goals for Loara (12-7-2, 2-3-1).

In other Empire League games:

Century 1, Cypress 0--Junior Alan Merida scored on a header with six minutes remaining for visiting Century (7-6-2, 4-2).

El Dorado 4, Katella 0--Ignacio Cid scored his 32nd goal for El Dorado (22-3, 6-0).

In the Century League:

Villa Park 2, Foothill 0--Andy Miller and Kenney Vincent scored for the Spartans (10-5-3, 4-2). Foothill is 10-7-4, 3-1-2.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 1, Fullerton 1 (OT)--Carlos Faudoa played goalkeeper in the first half and had four saves, then scored the tying goal on a penalty shot in the 50th minute for Fullerton (13-4-4, 4-0-2). Buena Park is 6-9-3, 3-1-2.

In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 1, Los Amigos 0--Senior midfielder Edgar Estorja headed in a corner kick by Angel Rivera at the 30-minute mark of the first half for host Santiago (13-3-3, 7-0-2).

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 1, Ocean View 0--David Linares scored in the 55th minute to win it for visiting Santa Ana (11-5-1, 5-0).

In the Serra League:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 5, Bellflower St. John Bosco 2--Spencer George scored twice for host Santa Margarita (17-1-3, 4-0).

No. 3 Mater Dei 4, Servite 3-- Kevin Novak scored his 15th goal and Chase Bastian and Eddie Jensen each had a goal and an assist for Mater Dei (22-4-1, 3-1). Servite is 16-6-4, 0-3-1.

In the Sea View League:

No. 8 Irvine 1, Newport Harbor 1--Sophomore Andy Newsom scored in the second half for visiting Newport Harbor (6-6-4, 2-0-3). Matt Taylor scored in the 21st minute for Irvine (8-2-4, 2-1-2).
