5 Shot to Death in Waning Hours of July 4 Holiday

At least five people lost their lives to gunfire as the Fourth of July holiday faded into early Wednesday morning, law enforcement officials said.

Lynwood police reported that a man was shot to death in the 10800 block of Atlantic Avenue at 9 p.m. Tuesday. A spokesman said there were few details available--including the man’s identity--pending an investigation.

In Inglewood, Jesse Wade, 21, of Lynwood, was killed as he was driving his car about 12:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 10200 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, police reported.

Officers were summoned to Centinela Hospital after employees reported that Wade had been shot. A passenger in Wade’s car was unharmed.

A third man died after he was shot in the chest in an unincorporated area of Compton about 2 a.m. Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Department reported. The shooting took place in the 1100 block of 144th Street, where police found the victim after witnesses had reported hearing shots and a scream.

In Altadena, a man died and two others were wounded at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday outside a Masonic lodge in the 2500 block of Fair Oaks Avenue, police said. The names of all three victims were withheld.

A short time later, police found 18-year-old Onell Padilla shot to death in Carson. Homicide detectives were sent to an address on Camelback Avenue about 3:30 a.m., where they found Padilla’s body.
