SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
Local children can “walk through history” and learn about the contributions of various ethnic groups at Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Discovery Camp.
Participants pan for gold and make adobe, and there are environmental and diversity days. Representatives of various ethnicities teach games and show their art and food samples.
Jacque Nunez, storyteller and cultural consultant for the Ajachemen Nation, started the program four years ago as the Indian Summer Camp, but it quickly evolved into a California history camp.
“Indians are a big piece of California history, but not the only important part,” Nunez said. “Kids walk through history and taste the lives of other people who lived in those periods. I think kids who experience history with their five senses will remember history.”
The Mission Discovery Camp began Monday and consists of five-day sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday until Aug. 4.
