Facility Has Fix for High Prices of Neutering Pets

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Tens of thousands of cats and dogs are put to sleep in Los Angeles every year simply because they do not have homes.

That heartbreaking fact could be changed if pet owners spayed or neutered their animals, but some cannot afford the fees to do so.

At the Holiday Humane Society, a veterinarian is employed full time and the prices for these services are kept low.

For cats, it costs $10 to neuter and $25 to spay.

Fees for dogs depend on their size. For smaller dogs it’s about $30 and for larger dogs about $50, for both spaying and neutering.

That’s significantly less than most vets charge.

In 1964, Billy Grosse founded Holiday Humane Society to provide low-cost neutering and spaying for dogs and cats, as well as low-cost vaccines.

Since Grosse’s death, Eileen Cornea and Jean Anger have operated the society, which depends on donations. At present, they also have some 200 dogs and cats up for adoption.

These animals enjoy air-conditioning and even have a small splash pool for playtime.

Services are offered at two San Fernando Valley locations, but the larger facility in North Hollywood houses the animals available for adoption.
