City officials are keeping tabs on the Brea West Center, a troubled strip mall that has operated for years at Central Avenue and Puente Street without a major tenant to draw customers.

Property managers for the center said two grocery store chains are interested in the vacant store, which was abandoned by Ralphs Grocery Co. in 1997 after the chain bought out Alpha Beta, the space’s former tenant.

Eric Nicoll, assistant redevelopment director for the city, said the agency has been trying for the past three years to prod the landlord and Ralphs to resolve their lease dispute so a new anchor store could move into the site.
