Nelson and Lindborg Capture Doubles Title

Jim Nelson of Irvine and Lenny Lindborg of South Laguna defeated Dick Doss of Newport Beach and Neil Lomax of San Antonio, 6-0, 6-0, in the finals of the men’s 65s doubles at the USTA Hardcourt National Championship at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach Saturday.

In the men’s 55s doubles semifinals, Daud Ahmed of Laguna Beach and Dennis Trout of Solvang beat Dean Corley of Aliso Viejo and Michael Stewart of Blue Bell, Pa., 6-3, 6-1. In the other semifinal, Ken Stuart and Larry Collins of Newport Beach were eliminated when they lost to Charlie Hoeveler and Chum Steele, 6-2, 6-3.

The 55s doubles final is scheduled for noon today.

BADMINTON

Mike Chansawangpuvana of Orange defeated Alberto Companioni of Florida, 15-9, 15-5, in the under-17 boys’ singles semifinals at the U.S. Junior National Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club and advanced to today’s finals at 10:30 a.m.

Chansawangpuvana also teamed with Raymond Wong of Orange to win, 15-5, 15-3, in the under-19 boys’ doubles semifinals. The pair will play in the final today at 12:45 p.m.

Wong, with sister Bonnie, also advanced to the under-19 mixed doubles final at 11:15 a.m. today.

Connie Hwang, who won the under-16 doubles title last year, lost, 5-11, 4-11, to Eva Lee in the girls’ under-17 singles semifinals.
