A pair of architects told the Brea Olinda Unified school board this week that to meet state guidelines for class-size reduction, the district may have to ignore California’s requirements on playground size.
The school board is considering ways to add classroom space to local campuses so the size of all third-grade classes can be reduced from 30 students to 20. The district hired the architectural firm of Y’Deen and Associates to study all local school sites to see how and where the extra classrooms could be provided.
Architect Mike Kohl told the board that all but one campus, Olinda Elementary, needed to have more classrooms to reduce the class sizes. With some schools, the only space available to put the classrooms would be on playground space.
