Former Walt Disney Home Denied Historic Status

A Los Feliz home once owned by Walt Disney was ruled to have “no architectural or cultural significance” and was denied a designation as a historic cultural monument by city officials this week.

The English-style home in the 2400 block of Lyric Avenue was once owned by Disney and his wife, Lilian. Built in 1928, the house incorporates several Tudor features, including intersecting gable roofs, multi-paned windows, a balcony and arched doorways.

Walt Disney is said to have worked on his animation projects in the garage, a factor that was reviewed and confirmed by the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission. The home was nominated for consideration because it was considered a good example of a small English Tudor house, retains a high degree of original building fabric and design--and was associated with Disney.

The home fell one vote shy Wednesday of winning the designation as a cultural monument.

The property’s current owner, who works in feature animation at DreamWorks, has undertaken restoration and design work on the exterior and interior.
