UCLA Getting Another Sciarra as Quarterback

John Sciarra, an All-Southern Section quarterback from St. Francis High who completed 60.5% of his passes last season, said Thursday he has committed to UCLA.

Sciarra’s father, John, was the quarterback when UCLA defeated Ohio State in the 1976 Rose Bowl.

The 6-foot-2 Sciarra passed for 2,861 yards and 28 touchdowns last season. He was highly recommended to the Bruins by his new coach, Jim Bonds, who played quarterback at UCLA.

Bonds coached Casey Clausen at Alemany last season, and Clausen ended up signing with Tennessee.

“I think he’s got one of the strongest arms I’ve seen, has great feet and is a competitor,” Bonds said.

Sciarra becomes the 11th quarterback from the region in the last year to commit to an NCAA Division I school and the second from the class of 2001.

Kyle Matter of Hart committed to Stanford in May.
