Huntington Needs Its Own Shelter

Share

* The approval of a feasibility study for an animal shelter in Huntington Beach by the City Council occurred for a number of reasons (June 21).

For the new contract with the county, Huntington Beach will be paying over $400,000 for animal control and shelter services. City residents currently pay over $400,000 in dog license fees to the county.

The county will be moving the existing shelter to Tustin by 2003; this is too far for Huntington Beach residents to go to look for a missing pet.

Also, the county will be looking to each of Orange County’s 21 contract cities for funding for the new shelter. The county also will be looking for long-term contracts from the cities to guarantee ongoing funding.

Save Our Strays of Huntington Beach is a community-based association dedicated to animal welfare. We feel the county provides substandard service for a very expensive price.

Preliminary research shows that Huntington Beach can have its own pro-humane animal shelter for less than it currently pays the county. Save Our Strays has gathered 1,600 signatures in the last few weeks in support of this shelter.
