Overtime Goal by Vasquez Carries Waves

Jose Vasquez scored in the second overtime to give the Waves a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Splash in an A-League soccer game Sunday at Santa Ana Stadium.

The victory broke a four-game losing streak for the Waves (10-12-1), who trail first-place San Diego in the Pacific Division by 10 points.

The Flash (12-7-3) took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game, but Jason Boyce tied the score with a goal in second-half injury time.

The Southern California Blues defeated the Prince William Sparklers of Woodbridge, Va., 1-0, in overtime to win the under-16 girls’ title at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

April Pettigrew of El Toro High scored the game-winner two minutes into the first overtime, beating Sparklers goalkeeper Sarah Guagliardo, who hadn’t given up a goal during the tournament.

The Blues are the first Far West champion to win that division since 1996.

The Huntington Beach Wolfpack lost on penalty kicks to Scott Gallagher of St. Louis in the boys’ under-18 championship game.

Gallagher converted its first three attempts and the Wolfpack their first two, but goalkeeper Brian Schoenbein saved a shot by the Wolfpack’s Devin Kato and Gallagher made the final two penalty kicks for a 5-4 advantage.
