Art

Paintings by L.A.’s most progressive Impressionist painters demonstrate how their work evolved in response to art movements of the time in “Circles of Influence: Impressionism to Modernism in Southern California Art 1910-1930,” opening Saturday at the Orange County Museum of Art. After East Coast artists and teachers such as William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri migrated to California, their influence changed the work of artists Mabel Alvarez, Guy Rose, Conrad Buff and others, resulting in the beginnings of avant-garde Modernism.

Dance

Like Homer’s “Iliad,” “The Ramayana” is an ancient epic that focuses on an abduction that leads to war--but its irresistible animal characters give it a personality all its own in versions performed across Asia. The Music Circle edition not only tells the story in dance but also shows how each culture interpreted it. Ramaa Bharadvaj, Nandita Behera and Anjani Ambegaokar perform segments of the story in different classical dance idioms of India. I Nyoman Wenten and Nanik Wenten, respectively, showcase Balinese and Javanese traditions. Sophiline Cheam demonstrates the fabled Cambodian approach. Come an hour early and you can shop for Asian food and folk art right outside the theater.

* The Music Circle “The Ramayana,” Thorne Hall, Occidental College, 1600 Campus Road, Eagle Rock. 5 p.m. $15 to $45. (626) 405-9759.
