Charlie Chaplin’s 1936 classic “Modern Times,” a whimsical satire of modern industry, labor unrest and the clash between rich and poor, is the featured film of this year’s Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Annual Silent Film Gala. The event will also serve as the world premiere of the film’s newly restored Chaplin score, which will be performed by the orchestra. Composer-conductor Timothy Brock, who has spent a year leading the restoration, will be guest conductor. Dustin Hoffman is the honorary chairman for the evening.

Art

Works by Korean American artist Nam June Paik, one of the earliest video artists and a founder of the Fluxus movement, will be displayed in “Nam June Paik: Video Art Pioneer,” opening Saturday at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The artist is best known for creating massive sculptural installations with television sets. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be “TV Clock,” recently acquired by the museum and composed of 24 color televisions mounted upright on pedestals.

Latin music will come to the forefront at the third annual South Park Mariachi Festival at South Park in Los Angeles. Mariachi Juvenil Cobras de Jalisco, Latin jazz artist Bobby Rodriquez and Latin pop group Quetzal will be among the featured musical performers. Carnival rides, children’s activities and performances by children will add to the festivities.

Rene Auberjonois, William Windom and Beverly Garland are among the cast of TV, stage and film veterans who will perform California Artists Radio Theatre’s production of James Barrie’s comedy fantasy, “Dear Brutus.” The program will be presented as a classic live radio play complete with old-style sound-effects artistry. Recorded for later National Public Radio broadcast over KPFK-FM (90.7).

Taper, Too, the Mark Taper Forum’s experimental theater testing grounds, returns after a five-year hiatus to a new venue, the Actors’ Gang, opening with Luis Alfaro’s “Black Butterfly, Jaguar Girl, Pinata Woman and Other Superhero Girls Like Me.” This “homegirl poetry jam” is based on observations of teenage girls growing up in East Los Angeles. It shares the bill with Roy Conboy’s rock ‘n’ roll memory play, “Drive My Coche.”
