Council Eliminates 2 Smart Shuttle Lines
The City Council agreed Tuesday to terminate two of the six Smart Shuttle bus routes in the San Fernando Valley because of low ridership, but officials say there are alternatives available for riders.
Smart Shuttle’s smaller-than-normal buses travel a short, circular route and can depart from the route for a block or two for special requests.
Starting July 1, the city Department of Transportation will end service on the Sherman Way/Victory Boulevard line, which averaged only 16 passengers per hour, and the Nordhoff Street/Parthenia Street line, which averaged 14 passengers per hour. In comparison, the Van Nuys Smart Shuttle averages 33 passengers per hour, transportation planner Phil Akers said.
Transit officials told the council that the Nordhoff Street/Parthenia Street area will soon be served by a new DASH bus service. The Sherman Way/Victory Boulevard area is served by a long-standing Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus line.
The council also approved continued funding for 10 other Smart Shuttle lines, including the remaining four in the Valley.
