Are Stanley Cup Playoffs Over Yet?

It’s official. The Times hates hockey. In a city where there are three pro hockey teams and no NFL teams, it is truly offensive that the presentation of the oldest championship trophy in professional sports gets buried on Page 3.

Once again, your paper has treated the NHL as second-class citizens. After what was perhaps the most intense goaltender battle the Stanley Cup has ever seen, you people chose to bury the outcome of this magnificent championship series with a half-page article on Page 3. Instead of seeing MVP Scott Stevens hoisting the Cup on Page 1, we were all treated to a riveting column on the present employment status of Kurt Rambis.

Not only do you deserve to be checked into the boards for this terrible puck-handling decision, you should also receive a 10-issue misconduct penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct!

Regarding Andrew Jamner’s letter of June 3 on your lack of hockey coverage: If Mr. Jamner would look at a Nielsen rating every now and then, he would see that Southern Californians just do not watch hockey unless the Kings or Ducks are involved, and waiting for them to make a playoff appearance in June might be a while.

Your minimal coverage on the NHL and maximizing on the NBA is right on what Southern Californians are watching and reading about.

I’d like to congratulate Larry Robinson on yet another Stanley Cup victory. I guess the Devils’ players didn’t have a problem with his way of doing things. The Kings can talk about all the progress they made this past season, but Larry accomplished the exact same thing [two seasons ago], fifth place in the conference and being swept in the first round with a far inferior team. Which is why he couldn’t bench or discipline anyone out here because of the lack of depth. Again, way to go Larry.

Pedro Martinez wins a Cy Young. The Rams win a Super Bowl. Larry Robinson wins a Stanley Cup. It’s a shame they don’t give out rings for poor judgment. This was a banner year.
