14 Homes Evacuated After Rail Tank Ammonia Leak

Share

Officials evacuated 14 homes and told residents in dozens of others to stay inside Tuesday while crews sealed a railroad tanker leaking highly caustic ammonia gas.

Residents noticed a mist above the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tanker at about 6:20 a.m. near the 8700 block of Warvale Street, said Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Steve Valenzuela. Subzero degree anhydrous ammonium, an industrial cleaner, was seeping from a flange on top of the car.

About 3,500 Metrolink and Amtrak passengers were delayed for hours on shared rails from Orange County into Los Angeles.

Residents returned home and the rail lines opened about 1:30 p.m.
