A 16-year-old Pasadena High School student was killed in front of the school Tuesday when the minivan he was riding in was struck by another car.

The accident occurred about 3:15 p.m. when the driver of the minivan, the youth’s aunt, pulled away from the curb and attempted to make a left turn, said Pasadena Police Lt. Richard Sandoval.

“She crossed in front of the path of another car,” Sandoval said. “This caused the 16-year-old to be partially ejected and the vehicle landed on him.” He had not been wearing a seat belt.

The youth, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Medical Center.

A 14-year-old passenger in the minivan suffered minor injuries and the driver was uninjured. The driver of the other car, which ended up wedged beneath the van, was not seriously injured, authorities said.

Passers-by lifted the van off the boy before paramedics arrived.

A group of about 20 tearful students who witnessed the crash gathered on a grassy strip nearby and consoled each other.
