Hospital Sale Leads to $3 Million in Grants
The California Community Foundation has awarded area health organizations more than $3 million in grants generated from the sale of the Centinela Hospital Medical Center, foundation officials announced.
Fifteen grants totaling $3,138,979 were awarded to six hospitals and nine community health care centers. The funds will go for an array of uses, from $750,000 for renovating the emergency room at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood to $140,230 for providing a nurse for a Hawthorne School District program.
The grants come from the foundation’s Centinela Medical Community and Centinela Medical Care funds, which were established from proceeds from the 1996 sale of the then-nonprofit hospital to a private, for-profit operator.
The foundation makes grants regularly to help meet health needs of indigent residents in Inglewood and parts of Hawthorne, Lennox, Los Angeles, El Segundo, Watts, Compton and Lawndale.
