Titans’ Hill Falls in NCAA Wrestling

Cal State Fullerton freshman T.J. Hill lost in overtime, 6-5, to Virginia’s Steve Garland in the semifinals of the 125-pound bracket Friday at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis.

Hill will now compete in the wrestle-back bracket and attempt to compete for third place.

He reached the semifinals by upsetting fifth-seeded Pat Cassidy of Indiana, 7-6, and defeating Ryan Escobar of Illinois, 4-2, and Ruben DeLeon of Cal State Bakersfield, 6-5.

In other weights involving Titan wrestlers, Jason Webster was eliminated in the 174-pound consolation bracket. He lost to 12th-seeded Nick Mengerink of Pittsburgh in a fall at 1:35, then defeated Rob Anspach of Hofstra with a pin at 5:55. He was eliminated by Joseph Tucceri of Cornell on a 5-1 decision.

At 149 pounds, Fullerton’s Joseph Calavitta lost to second-seeded Adam Tirapelle of Illinois, who won with a pin at 1:58. Calavitta, who wrestled for Calvary Chapel High, was eliminated with a loss to Max Odom of Harvard.

Babak Nejadmaghhaddam was eliminated at 197 pounds.

In the 2000 Sun West softball tournament:

Chapman takes two--The Panthers (11-3) shut out Alma College, 4-0, then went eight innings in beating Sioux Falls, 7-3.

In pool play at the Kia Classic:

Cal State Fullerton 6, Louisiana Monroe 0--Gina Oaks pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out eight, and Monica Lucatero and Delaina Talili each drove in two runs for Fullerton (24-3).

The Titans lost to DePaul, 2-0, later in the day in the first round of the championship bracket after Katy Kukman hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. The Titans had three hits against DePaul and left runners on base in the second and seventh innings.

DePaul advances to the quarterfinals and will face No. 1-ranked Washington at 3 p.m. today. Fullerton will play Texas in a consolation game, also at 3.
