An unidentified Huntington Beach scuba diver died late Saturday after getting separated from a group who were diving near a small cove just north of Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, authorities said.

The 51-year-old man’s friends found him after a frantic 10- to 15-minute search in the waters around Fisherman’s Cove, said Laguna Beach Police Officer Eric Lee. They pulled him to shore, but the man, who had been wearing full diving gear, was already in full cardiac arrest, Lee said.

Police arrived soon after being called around 8:30 p.m. and conducted cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Paramedics from the Laguna Beach Fire Department and Laguna Beach city lifeguards also arrived, and worked on the diver as they rushed him to South Coast Medical Center, Lee said. The diver was pronounced dead at the hospital.
