Charting the Lead: A look at the Bruins’ lead or deficit by the minute

First Half

What Happened: The Bruins scored the game’s first seven points and sprinted to a 14-2 lead seemingly before the Terrapins even got their warm-ups off. Maryland weathered that storm, tying it at 19. But the Bruins’ athleticism outmatched the Terrapins’ long-range shooting, and UCLA blitzed Maryland with a 17-4 run to end the half.

What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: A month ago, they were the sleeping giants who were most to blame for UCLA’s sorry season. Saturday, Bruin big men Dan Gadzuric and Jerome Moiso made it look as though the Terrapins were the ones napping, and even carried the Bruins while point guard Earl Watson was on the bench early because of a cut over his eye.

Winning Numbers: Watson played Santa Claus nine months early, dishing out 12 assists with no turnovers. Things were going so well for Watson--two days after firing errant alley-oop passes off the backboard against Ball State--he hooked up with teammates on alley-oops four times.

Wrong Numbers: Apparently, Maryland enjoyed watching UCLA’s high-flying offense so much it preferred to stay on defense, turning the ball over 10 times.

Leading Scorers: UCLA--Gadzuric and Moiso, 10. Maryland--Terence Morris, 11.

Second Half

UCLA: 105

Maryland: 70

What Happened: UCLA didn’t take long in making sure there would be no Maryland comeback, scoring 21 of the half’s first 26 points for a 70-38 lead. The Bruins may have been on the court with Morris, but probably already were thinking Fizer, as in Iowa State’s Marcus Fizer, with 15 minutes to play.

What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Los Angeles-area fans may have wanted to see how many assists Watson could pick up, or watch the Bruins reach 100 points, but CBS didn’t. The game was so out of hand, the network cut away with more than six minutes left to show Gonzaga’s upset of St. John’s. By the time the Bruins were back on the tube, they were at 103.

Winning Numbers: After running away from the Terrapins in the first half, the Bruins bombed away on them in the second, making their first six three-point shots and finishing nine for 15 from behind the arc in the half.

Wrong Numbers: It might be a term heard at the race track, but the Terrapin shooting was terrible across the board. Field-goal percentage: 36.6%; three-point percentage: 15.4%; free-throw percentage: 47.1.%
